Alternative Learning Experience Programs

File: IGBI

The Lake Washington School District recognizes the benefits students may attain from participation in alternative learning experience programs, consisting of student contract learning programs or independent studies. An alternative learning program may be conducted on or off campus and must conform with state requirements.

The superintendent shall develop procedures for alternative learning experience programs. The procedures shall contain, as a minimum, the following components:

  1. Each student participating in an alternative learning experience shall have a written plan of instruction designed to meet the individual needs of the student which shall be approved by a district official designated by the superintendent.
  2. The curriculum and course requirements shall be consistent with basic education goals and high school graduation requirements.
  3. Student performance shall be supervised, evaluated and recorded by district staff. Each student's educational progress will be reviewed at least once during the first twenty (20) school days of the alternative learning experience. Thereafter, it will be reviewed every forty-five (45) school days, and the results of each evaluation will be communicated to the student and if the student is in grades K-8, to the student's parent or guardian. If the student is not substantially successful in completing the learning activities described in the written plan, a revised plan may be implemented. The revised plan shall be designed to enhance the student's successful completion of the learning activities within ninety (90) school days from the date the district first determined the student is not substantially successful on the original plan. If the student is not substantially successful in completing the learning activities within those next ninety (90) days (or sooner at the discretion of the district), a plan shall be devised to remove the student from the alternative learning program no later than the end of the current school year, and for a period of at least one (1) school term. Students removed from the alternative learning program shall be offered the opportunity to enroll in another course of study.
  4. Each student's alternative learning experience plan and performance evaluation of the plan and all records of enrollment, attendance, and total hours of participation in educational activities for the student shall be maintained and available for audit in the appropriate school building.
  5. Parents or guardians of students who participate in alternative learning experiences may supervise their student's plan.
